Meet Azeem Mohammed

Azeem Mohammed, The CSU Study Centre Melbourne LecturerHow long have you worked at the CSU Study Centre Melbourne?

I joined CSU Study Centre Melbourne last year in December, but have been an active part of Study Group and CSU since 2003.

Tell me about yourself and what drives you

I see myself as a mentor who positively shapes the careers of students. It’s more like a gardener’s role who looks after fledgling seedlings and provides nurturing support that allows them to go grow tall and strong. This ability to influence the life and careers of young people is what motivates me.

Tell me an interesting story about an experience you’ve had at the CSU Study Centre

There are many interesting experiences but one that stands out is from my early days at the CSU Study Centre. I walked into the class room and started cleaning the board. When I moved back I saw a huge cake on the table. I wondered what it was all about. Then the entire class got up and said “sir, we really want to celebrate as most of us are graduating this term and will not see you anymore.”

They told me that after 12 weeks of study, they really appreciated the support I’d given them and the way I’d helped them to understand the concepts that will help them to perform well in the future.

How did you get to where you are today? E.g. if you are a teacher, what inspired you to teach?

I began my career as civil engineer but with the IT era moving in, I completed my education in Information Systems and Business Administration. Due to my involvement in helping my fellow students in computer labs and my good grades, I was offered the opportunity to teach at the university.

The satisfaction I got as a teacher helped me to develop my academic career.

In your opinion, why should students choose to study at the CSU Study Centres?

I see the CSU Study Centres as an opportunity for students who seek closer interaction with teaching staff, superior resources, and above all a degree that carries prestige and professional recognition.

What do you love the most about working for the CSU Study Centre?

There are many things I could say, but the most important thing for me has been the encouragement and support from my superiors and peers. The culture of respect embodies the ideal working environment for knowledge workers like me.

What are your hobbies? What do you do in the weekends?

I am an avid sportsman. Whenever I get spare time, I play cricket or soccer with my friends.

My weekends include spending time with my family, watching Foxtel, and the occasional Aussie barbeque.

What is the most interesting place you’ve ever been to and why?

Traveling to new places is my passion, and this took me to the Mediterranean Island of Cyprus. The ocean where they claim she emerged is a breathtaking place and is an out of the world experience. I had a similar experience when I took the Great Ocean Drive and was absolutely smitten by the natural beauty of our native landscape.

What advice would you give students who are planning to come to Australia? What should they be prepared for?

Coming to study in any foreign country is a challenge for most students, but Australia has a unique multicultural element that makes it comfortable and welcoming.

The tertiary education system is very well aligned to the needs of international students. My advice to the prospective students would be to prepare for an exceptional educational and self-development experience that would not only enhance their learning but also improve their awareness of the Global community
